| YADANA ( Pali - Ratana) |
Yadana means a thing to be desired or adored, a treasure, a gem, a jewel, or an
insignia or accoutrement of powerful and important personages
such as the seven treasures of the Cakkavattin, the universal
monarch.
Sometimes, a distinction is made between the spiritual treasures, named Lokkuttara
Yadana and worldly treasures, named Loki Yadana.
Lokkuttara Yadana refers to the Buddha, the Law or Truth, and the Sangha Monastic Order,
which are also collectively known as THE THREE GEMS.
Among the Loki Yadana or worldly treasures include : the seven treasures of a Cakkavattin
(the universal monarch), the nine gems of ordinary mortals
and the ten precious mentioned in connexion with the Vanayas
or the monastic code of conduct.
The Seven Treasures or Accoutrements of the Cakkavattin are : the wheel or disc weapon, the elephant,
the horse, the ruby, the empress, the treasurer and the prince.
The Nine Gems of Mortals are : sapphire, diamond,
Oriental Cat's eye, lapis lazuli, emerald, garnet, topaz,
coral and pearl.
The Ten Precious Things (Vanayas) are : pearl,
emerald, ruby; cat's eye, conch shell, quartz, coral, gold
and silver, ruby, variegated ruby.
