| Blue topaz: Birthday Blue |
Blue Topaz, with its clarity, durability, availability and affordable
cost, is one among the most popular gemstones on the market today.
The gem is but a shade of topaz which in itself is a rarity in nature.
Known for its definite, uniform color ranging from sky blue to Swiss blue, blue topaz is sometimes confused with aquamarine.
To avoid this,it is useful to note that, while aquamarine sometimes has a greenish-blue
or bluish-green tint, blue topaz will always look blue or bluish gray, except that in those surface-enhanced stones the color ranges from
blue to greenish- blue to emerald green.
Blue topaz from Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and China, mined
mostly as colorless or slightly tinted topaz at first, irradiated
and heated later, come to have the resultant aqua shape of permanent
nature.

In addition to blue , the stone comes in
a variety of colors including golden yellow, orange yellow, reddish
orange, sherry red, deep pink, and many shades in between.
With its Mohs-scale hardness of "8", exceptionally strong and durable
as it is to suit everyday wear, hard blows, which can split, crack
or chip it, are to be avoided nevertheless. |
